La Petite Creperie

La Petite Creperie
La Petite Creperie

Address: 125 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 3000 (located just opposite to the Melbourne Town Hall)

This popular crepe takeaway kiosk operates out of a redesigned news stand! Since 2008, it has been an iconic Melbourne crepe institution. It is one of the most well known spots for crepes in Melbourne. I think of it as France with a hint of Melbourne.

Take a stroll along Swanston Street and you will usually see people lining up for a delicious crepe in the evenings here. The La Petite Creperie stand serves a range of tasty savoury and sweet crepes to take away with handy packaging allowing you to take away and enjoy it as you wander on exploring Melbourne. I can say I have enjoyed way too many nutella crepes from here! I think you may too.

What is a crepe?

With a batter often consisting of  flour, eggs, milk, butter and the occasional special ingredient, crepes are popular all over the world. They can be filled with both sweet and savoury ingredients making them one the most versatile and simple dishes to enjoy. While many cultures enjoy this dish, the origin of crêpes is generally attributed to Brittany, a region in the northwest of France.

You may see crepes sometimes referred to as “galettes” – this word is reserved for crepes made from buckwheat flour and in some cases, for savoury crepes (don’t confuse these with Galette des Rois, a totally different French dessert). The more popular, modern and generally sweet varieties of crepes we know now are made from wheat flour. It is thought the Latin word “crispus” (meaning “curled”) is be the origin of the word “crepe”.

Crepes have increased in popularity since the 19th century and are now some of the most loved dishes worldwide. After all, with a range of forms, fillings and flavours, it is hard not to love them! From sweet toppings like chocolate / Nutella, jam, sugar, strawberries and other fruits to savoury options like ham, eggs and cheese, there is really no limits or rules as to what can and can’t be in a crepe. They are hard not to love!

In conclusion

So to summarise, irrespective of whether you want a traditional savoury ham and cheese galette, a sweet crepe with Nutella or jam, or even something a little more unique and adventurous, Melbourne definitely has a creperie and crepe that will absolutely match your cravings. Dine in or takeaway kiosks, the crepe options in Melbourne are endless. So how about a trip to Paris without even leaving the city and enjoy some of the best crepes in Melbourne.
