Happy New Year Melbourne! And with the new year, it is time for the delicious… Galette des Rois!

Read on to find out more about the king cake and see where you can get the best one right here in Melbourne.

What is the Galette des Rois?

The Galette des Rois is a traditional cake most famous in France. It is an iconic and historic dessert made in January of each year.

The galette is otherwise known as the king cake or three king cake in English and koningentaart in Flemish and Dreikönigskuchen in German.

In the majority of France, it is a puff pastry filled with frangipane (a tasty cream made from sweet almonds, eggs, butter and sugar). Regional variations exist including the South of France version flavoured with orange blossom and topped with candied fruits like citrus and cherries. Portuguese, German, Dutch and Spanish variants of the galette can also be found.

The king cake is historically associated in many countries with the Epiphany (or the twelfth day of Christmas when the three Kings arrived in Betlehem to meet newborn Jesus). While it is no longer a particularly religious holiday in France, they luckily still enjoy the cake that comes with it!

With the celebration and the cake comes the tradition of drawing the king or queen: a “fève“ is hidden in the galette before baking, and the guest that finds it in their slice is symbolically declared to be king or queen and gets to wear a paper crown for the day. The feve is made of a range materials, most commonly a porcelain figurine (note: choking hazard).

Fun fact:  Nearly 70% of French people admit to cheating and rigging the process so kids find the feve.
