The Fairies Tree, also called the Fairy Tree or the Ola Cohn Fairies Tree, is located in the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne.

This magnificent over 300 year old tree stump (of a Red Gum tree) is a must see for so many reasons.

Why is The Fairies Tree in Melbourne’s Fitzroy Gardens so special?

In addition to being a mesmerising ancient tree stump itself worthy of a visit, the tree has carvings on it made by an Australian author and artist named Ola Cohn dating back to between 1931 and 1934. These have captivated visitors to the grounds for many years.

The carvings are located on the tree stump. The intricate series of carvings showcase fairy tale characters like fairies, dwarves, elves as well as animals and birds, many of them Australian. Each carving tells a unique story and showcases the artist’s enormous talent.

If you were wondering, Ola Cohn has published a couple of books related to the the colloquially named fairy tree.

This is an excerpt from the foreword of her book “The Fairies Tree”, it is also on tree plaque itself:

“I have carved in a tree in the Fitzroy Gardens for you, and the fairies, but mostly for the fairies and those who believe in them, for they will understand how necessary it is to have a fairy sanctuary – a place that is sacred and safe as a home should be to all living creatures.”

Where else in the world can you find such an incredible mix of art, nature and stories in one location?
